In chapter three of “Artful Design,” a compelling discourse emerges on the intrinsic beauty of simplicity. It resonates with a truth many of us intuit but often overlook: that profound complexity can arise from the simplest of foundations.
In particular, the principled was outlined as:
Principle 3.5: Build complexity from simplicity.
This tenet recalls notable emergent phenomena such as Conway’s Game of Life or Langton’s Ant. Both epitomize how simple rules can yield unpredictable and complex patterns. At a glance, they may seem rudimentary, but their outcomes are deeply intricate and mesmerizing.
Another principle that caught my eye was:
Principle 3.7: Prompt users to experience substance (not technology)
I was transported to moments when I’ve stood, awestruck, amidst interactive art exhibits. A poignant instance was my visit to Tokyo’s teamLab Planets and teamLab Borderless. These installations are marvels that merge technology with art, yet the technology itself doesn’t overshadow the substance of the experience. Instead, it serves as a medium through which narratives unfold, especially those echoing sentiments of environmentalism and the profound Japanese concept of “mono no aware” (物の哀れ). This principle underscores the value of substance over spectacle, reminding designers to create immersive experiences that evoke thought and emotion rather than just technological admiration.
Venturing further into the realm of artful design in the real world, my mind drifts to the enigmatic “OmegaMart” exhibit in Las Vegas. On the surface, it masquerades as a seemingly ordinary grocery store, albeit stocked with peculiar products.
Yet, beyond this façade lies an enigma. Delving deeper into OmegaMart, visitors are introduced to a realm replete with interactive displays harnessing audiovisual technology. But it’s not the technology that captures one’s soul; it’s the profound narrative underpinning each installation. The lore, both metaphorical and literal, invites visitors into a universe of stories and experiences, all rooted in the principles elucidated in this chapter.
In reflection, these principles serve not just as academic musings, but as guiding lights that resonate with real-world experiences. They are reminders of the beauty in simplicity, the power of narrative, and the importance of creating experiences that linger in the soul long after the lights fade. Whether in the digital patterns of Conway’s Game or the echoing corridors of OmegaMart, these principles remind us to see, feel, and think beyond the surface, diving deep into the artful design of life and the world around us.
